About the Role
The Lead Developer Relations Advocate will serve as a product and industry expert who is experienced in the data integration space to advise our technical buyers/customers on how best to adopt and use Fivetran. This is a senior role focused on technical content creation, product advocacy and organic community engagement, targeting primarily technical data leaders. The content will focus on end-to-end architecture blueprints for data leaders - showcasing how features fit into an Enterprise implementation. The role bridges the gap between technical implementation and business value, demonstrating how Fivetran can be effectively used within existing enterprise ecosystems. You will report into the VP of Product & Portfolio Marketing with a dotted line into our Principal GTM Strategist.
This is a full-time, hybrid position based out of our Oakland, CA office. Our hybrid work model offers a blend of remote flexibility and in-person collaboration, including two days in the office each week to connect and build as a team.
Your Mission:
- Test and scale the most effective ways to reach, educate, and inspire highly technical data leaders —whether through data leader meetups, hands-on workshops, or viral technical content.
- Shape Fivetran’s technical advocacy strategy, from thought leadership to developer enablement, ensuring alignment with leader and practitioner needs.
- Prove what drives adoption—whether through technical best practice case studies for leaders or open-source collaborations for engineers.
What You’ll Do
Build & Iterate on Fivetran’s Technical Engagement Strategy
- Define how Fivetran engages with data leaders (e.g., CDO summits, governance frameworks) and practitioners (e.g., hackathons, deep-dive tutorials).
- Develop persona-specific engagement playbooks (e.g., a monthly "Architecting with Fivetran" series for leaders, a troubleshooting guide for engineers).
- Track and optimize engagement metrics (e.g., pipeline influence, community growth, content reach).
Develop & Distribute Technical Content
- Content creation both formally and organically: Produce technical content like blogs, case studies, demos showcasing practical applications of Fivetran both on Fivetran social channels and on their own social channels, as well as in data communities (i.e. LinkedIn, dbt, reddit, AI communities). That content should focus on these topics:
- Product advocacy: Advocate for Fivetran, highlighting product capabilities and very specific, technical blueprints for Fivetran implementation.
- Thought leadership: Use their already established thought leader platform in the data space and participate in speaking engagements, writing/producing content across different media outlets, and advising on data engineering topics and emerging trends as they relate to Fivetran.
- Own the customizable platform narrative: Fivetran has been improving its extensibility in response to the growing need to interoperate with complex enterprise architectures. This person should track and understand these needs and advise on how Fivetran can be customized to meet these needs.
- Be the public face of Fivetran, speaking at events like Data + AI Summit (practitioners) and Gartner CDO Circle (leaders).
Skills We're Looking For
- 5+ years in data engineering, developer relations, or technical/product evangelism, with deep expertise in ETL/ELT, data warehouses, etc.
- Hands-on experience with Fivetran, ELT tools, infrastructure as code, orchestrators, data warehouses, data lakes and transformations tooling (dbt and/or Coalesce).
- Strong public speaking and technical writing skills—able to break down complex data challenges.
- Proven track record of engaging data engineering communities (e.g., through open-source, meetups, or content).
- Self-starter mindset—thrives in a fast-paced environment and can lead initiatives independently.
- Experience with video creation.
Bonus Skills
- Experience with GenAI/ML (e.g., unstructured data, RAG, Agentic workflows).
- Contributions to data-related open-source projects (e.g., dbt, Iceberg).
Note: This role requires 30%+ travel for events like Data + AI Summit, Gartner Conferences, smaller meetups and conferences, and customer visits.
